India is a land of diversity and has one of the most linguistically diverse populations in the world. According to a report, there are 19,500 mother tongues spoken in India. However, the Indian Constitution has recognized only 22 languages.
Not just in India, people across the globe speak several Indian languages. Here’s a list of the 10 most spoken Indian Languages in 2022.
Hindi: 600 Million Speakers
Hindi is not only the most spoken language in India but also joins the list of the most spoken languages in the world with Chinese Mandarin, Spanish and English. The Hindi language is spoken in more than 20 countries outside India, and Pakistan and Fiji have a significant population of Hindi Speakers.
Bengali: 268 Million Speakers
Bengali is among the top 10 spoken languages in the world. It is the National and official language of Bangladesh where 98% of the population use Bengali as their first language.
It is the official language of the state of West Bengal and is also predominantly spoken in Tripura, Assam, Bihar, and other northeastern states.
Urdu: 230 Million Speakers
Urdu is the official language of Pakistan and has official status even in a few Indian States. It is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, and Urdu Speakers can be found majorly in South Asia.
Marathi: 99 Million Speakers
Marathi comes in the list of top 15 most spoken languages in the world and is predominantly spoken in the state of Maharashtra where it is the official language. It is the co-official language in Goa, Daman, Diu, and Silvassa.
Telugu: 96 Million Speakers
Telugu is the official language of the Southern Indian states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Telugu natives are also present in the states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and a few other states in India.

Tamil: 85.5 Million Speakers
Tamil is the official language in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, Sri Lanka, and Singapore. Tamil speakers are also found in the Southern Indian states and many other countries outside India, such as Malaysia, Myanmar, Mauritius, and others.
Gujarati: 62 Million Speakers
It is the language spoken by the Gujarati people in the state of Gujarat. Apart from Gujarat, it is also an official language in Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman, and Diu. Gujarati is the fourth most spoken language in London and is also spoken in parts of Southeast Africa.
Kannada: 59 Million Speakers
Kannada is the official language of the State of Karnataka. This Dravidian language is spoken by linguistic minorities in other southern Indian states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu.
Malayalam: 37.7 Million Speakers
Malayalam is the official language of the state of Kerala and the union territories of Lakshadweep and Puducherry. It is also spoken by linguistic minorities in the southern Indian states. Due to a large population of Malayali expatriates, Malayalam is also spoken in Persian Gulf Countries.
Odia: 35 Million Speakers
Formerly called Oriya, it is the official language in the state of Odisha. Around 82% of native Odia speakers are present in Odisha and it is also spoken in parts of Chattisgarh, Jharkhand, and West Bengal.
